Who runs your school?
Many schools are run by an academy trust rather than the council. The trust employs the staff, sets policies and makes many of the big decisions – so it's worth knowing who it is and how its schools are doing. Here are the trusts running schools in Havering, side by side, with the council's own schools for comparison.

How to read this – and why it isn't a league table
- Results compared with what you'd expect come from our Context Comparator: each school's latest GCSE or SATs results against what you'd expect for its pupils, so a trust isn't marked down for running schools in tougher areas.
- Joined as a struggling school marks “sponsor-led” academies – usually schools a trust was asked to take on because they were struggling. Trusts that do that job start from a lower base.
- Teachers leaving each year is the share of a trust's teachers here who moved school or left teaching each year, over three years (DfE school workforce census), against England's rate for the same mix of schools.
- Openness is whether the trust's schools answered our Freedom of Information request about behaviour and bullying.
- Money comes from each school's accounts for 2024/25 (DfE financial returns). A trust's head office – finance, HR, its leaders, school improvement – is paid for out of its schools' budgets; we show what it cost per pupil and as a share of the schools' income, and count each school's share of it before working out what was left over. Council-run schools also pay for council services, but that money is held back by the council before it reaches them, so head-office costs can only be compared between trusts. Reserves are money held at the end of the year. The Department for Education sets no required level, but treats under 5% of a year's income as a possible sign a trust is stretched and 20% or more as high – money it expects to be earmarked for specific plans such as building work. We use those same bands. Every trust must explain its reserves in its annual accounts, so a high figure is a fair question to ask, not a sign of wrongdoing (DfE guidance). Council-run schools follow their own council's rules instead.
- This only covers each trust's schools in Havering. Large trusts run schools across the country. With only one or two schools, figures are a snapshot rather than a pattern.
- Academy trusts are overseen by the Department for Education rather than the council. If you have a concern about a school, start with the school, then its trust; GOV.UK explains what to do next.
